We believe that consultation is important because - as with all people - disabled people have differing views and opinions on all subjects. Therefore by ensuring that a broad range of opinion is sourced on any given topic, those people truly affected by any decision get to have an input.

We are regularly asked to carry out consultation projects. Below is a list of the Consultation Projects that we have been involved with and link to any available reports on the consultation.

Draft Rights Of Way Improvement Plan 2 Consultation for Somerset Have Your Say!
Members of Compass Disability Network were given an opportunity to contribute to Somerset County Council Draft Rights of Way Improvement Plan consultation at the beginning of 2015. The Improvement Plan identifies how Somerset County Council proposes to improve the provision of public rights of way and other access in Somerset for walkers, cyclists, equestrians and those with visual or mobility impairments. The improvement plan has now been revised and updated, copies of the summary document along with the consultation questionnaire were sent to members who have expressed an interest in receiving this information.  37 members participated in this consultation.  Please click here to view report.

Somerset County Council Sitting Service Consultation
Somerset County Council is currently carrying out a consultation on a proposal to change how the council charges for the sitting service which if approved would affect how much some service users would have to pay in future.  This consultation has now closed

Have your say about pharmacy services in Somerset!
Somerset County Council is currently carrying out a consultation regarding pharmacies in Somerset. They want to make sure that community pharmacies in Somerset are providing the right services for local people. It’s vital that if you use your local pharmacy that you tell Somerset County Council what you need from the service, if you have any problems accessing them and whether or not pharmacies are providing the right services for you. So far, they have spoken to GPs, community pharmacies and questioned people in the street. This consultation has now closed

The results from this public consultation, along with the other feedback, will form the Somerset Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment, which will be used when planning community pharmacy services for the future here in Somerset.

Somerset Direct – New Phone System Feedback
14 people attended a meeting at The Meadway Hall, Compton Dundon on 22nd September to discuss plans to change the telephone number for contacting Somerset Direct.  Somerset County Council are planning to change to a single 0300 number with automated options available to transfer to the required department. Disabled people and carers came together to give their your views on how to make the new call system as accessible as possible and the best way to communicate the changes. Needs of young people with Autism
Somerset County Council is currently in the process of planning future services for children and young people with an autism spectrum condition and/or communication need.  In January 2014 a survey was distributed for parents, children and young people with an autism spectrum condition. As a follow on to this Somerset County Council wished to consult with young people aged 18-25 to give them a chance to reflect on their experience of and impact of autism services and mainstream services and consider outcomes.

Somerset County Council asked Compass Disability Network to approach young people who may be interested in sharing their views to provide feedback which would inform the Special Education Needs (SEN) review and Joint Autism Strategy. The findings from the interviews have been used to help Somerset County Council plan the priorities in their Somerset Autism Strategy. This consultation has now closed

Home Improvement Agency, Handymand and Community Equipment Service
Somerset County Council is currently in the process of reviewing it’s contracts for the Integrated Community Equipment Service and Home Improvement Agency and Handyperson service. As part of this process 20 people attended a meeting on the 25th June at Compass Disability Services offices in Taunton to give a small group of service users a chance to discuss proposals for the future service and look at what is important to them to feed into the development of the service specification that they go out to tender with.

Consultation regarding the use of Demand Responsive Transport
Somerset County Council has recently carried out a county wide consultation to understand Somerset residents transport requirement for the future. Following on from this piece of work Somerset County Council asked Compass Disability Network to work with them to give disabled people and carers a chance to give their views on the use of Demand Responsive Transport Services (Slinky) and discuss the results from the earlier consultation. 27 people attended a meeting on the 16th April at North Petherton Community Centre.  A report will shortly be available to view here. Local Account Meeting – 11th March The Williams Hall Stoke St Gregory
Somerset County Council asked Compass Disability Network to bring together a group of people who access a range of care and support services and carers, to discuss what they would like included in a report being produced by Somerset County Council.  The report is called their Local Account and will be about what they have achieved in adult social care over the past year, as well as plans for the following year.  22 people attended the meeting on the 11th March in Stoke St Gregory. The Bridgwater Way – Walking and Cycling Workshop 12th November 2013 Victoria Park Community Centre Bridgwater.
11 people took part in a workshop on the 12th November at Victoria Park Community Centre in Bridgwater and gave their views on the project plans for improved cycle paths, walking routes and active travel initiatives to make cycling and walking for work, school or fun, easier and safer.

Support in Sheltered Housing, Shaping Future Models in Somerset consultation 20th November 2013 The Meadway Hall, Compton Dundon.
18 people attended a meeting at The Meadway Hall in Compton Dundon on the 20th November.  Somerset County Council contracts with housing providers to deliver support to people who live in sheltered housing. The current contract for support in sheltered housing expires during October 2014. The meeting gave people a chance to discuss the preferred options and proposals for the future provision of the service and complete a survey.  The results from the surveys will be analysed for a report to be prepared for Cabinet Members of Somerset County Council to help the make their final decision. Please click here to view the report.

Carers in Control of their Support Event – 5th September The Meadway Hall, Compton Dundon.
27 people attended the Carers in Control of their Support workshop on the 5th September at the Meadway Hall, Compton Dundon and contributed to workshop discussions about what carers would like to see, what they need to realise this.   They also explored the options surrounding people being able to do assessments for themselves. Somerset County Council have a small amount of money to undertake some pilot work which they were interested to here from the group regarding the sort of pilots they think would be beneficial. The Carers Partnership Board will now review how to move forward with the pilot work.

Sheltered Housing Involvement Event 13th June 2013 Ruishton Village Hall
21 people took part in a workshop event on the 13th June at Ruishton Village Hall regarding the support provided in Sheltered Housing in Somerset.  A report has been submitted to Somerset County Council following the event.

The Bishops’ Palace – 18th March 2013
6 people attended a consultation meeting at the Bishops Palace in Wells on the 18th March to give their views on the plans for a sensory trail and garden at the attraction.

Carers Involvement Meetings – March 2013
38 people participated in the carers involvement meetings during March. 6 meetings took place in Wells, Carhampton, Bridgwater, Taunton, Crewkerne and Wincanton.  Carers were given the opportunity to have their views on what they need to support them, what has worked well and what hasn’t worked well with services they have received.  A full report will be available to view soon and feedback will also be given in the next edition of the Networker.

Yeovil Transport Strategy – Disability Workshop 29th January 2013
9 people came together at Yeovil Baptist Church on 29th January to participate in a workshop with Somerset County Council regarding the Yeovil Transport Strategy

Somerset Rural Life Museum Consultation
21 people participated in two events at the Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury on the 28th May 2012. So far the museum has been successful in getting through the first stage of a £625,000 Heritage Lottery Fund bid to fund a significant refurbishment of the museum. As part of the next stage of the application for Heritage Lottery Funds they gave members of the Compass Disability Network a chance to look around the current museum and welcomed suggestions for improvements to make the museum more accessible. Somerset Rural Life Museum Report

Parking Strategy Consultation
21 people attended a consultation meeting at our offices in Taunton on the 12TH December surrounding Somerset County Councils Draft Countywide Parking Strategy, this was part of a 12 week consultation period which ended on the 20th January concerning the strategy.   The strategy explains how much parking developments need to provide and how this should be designed and managed. This includes parking for blue badge holders and a number of other vehicles which have special requirements.  Participants were invited to give their views on the key parts of the strategy relevant to disabled people.  A report has been compiled and sent to Somerset County Council as part of the consultation.

Blue Badge Potential Increase Consultation (Dec 2011- Jan 2012)
)Somerset County Council asked us to distribute a survey to our members in November as part of the consultation on the potential increase in charges for blue badges in Somerset.  They have now compiled a report with the response to the consultation which can be found using the link below

Carers Consultation (Dec 2011)
21 people attended a consultation meeting on the 13th December to give their views on the proposals to commission a single organisation to provide a suite of services for carers in Somerset.  The meeting was facilitated by Somerset County Council who will be using the results of the consultation to feed into the drafting of the specification for Carer’s Services in Somerset. Somerset County Council have provided the response to the consultation below

Library Services in Somerset (Aug - Sep 2010)
Somerset County Council's Heritage & Library Service recently asked us to distribute a survey on their behalf to understand how future services should be developed for people with a hearing impairment. Rehabilitation Services in Somerset (June 2010)
A Piece of work took place including focus groups and the distribution of a questionnaire for NHS Somerset and Somerset County Council who currently provide a range of services which support rehabilitation and reablement. The aim was to look at ways of improving what people gain from rehabilitation and using resources effectively and to look at ensuring that future services reflect the changing needs of the population and looked at the whole approach.

Service User Group for Tender of Sensory Loss Services (9th & 11th November 2009)
This group provides service users with different experiences of Sensory Loss (Blind, Visually Impaired, Hard of Hearing and Profoundly Deaf) to interview organisations that had tendered for the review of Sensory Loss services in Somerset.
