The Hub

The Hub was launched in September 2009 – the full name of the project is the Compass Learning and Development Hub, which is why we simply refer to it as The Hub!

The purpose of this project is to bring together disabled people’s and carer’s experience, knowledge and skills to help inform and develop the learning of adult social care staff in Somerset and share best practice around user involvement.

The Hub meets every four times per year, and is made up of disabled people and carers with an interest in or experience of learning and staff development.  We aim to provide opportunities to enable adult social care staff to reflect on working practices and think about how they relate to people who use services.

Some examples of work that the Hub might be involved in include:

  • Advising on content and evaluation of training courses.
  • Working with social work students.
  • Involvement in creative forms of learning such as the arts, drama, images, film.

What have we done so far?

To date we have been involved in various pieces of work, such as:

  • Reviewing two sections of the Social Care Governance Workbook, which is a document produced by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and is shared nationally as a learning resource. The purpose of this workbook is to get adult social care teams to reflect on and evaluate their practice and make changes where needed.
  • Inputting into the review and development of Somerset’s social care ‘compliments, comments and complaints’ leaflet.
  • Taking part in a national project to review learning materials based on Skills for Care – the common core principles to support self care.
  • Making two short documentary style films in partnership with Bridgwater College students.  These films have been titled ‘Can you make it happen?’ and aims to convey the message of every disabled person’s right to choice, control and independence.  To view the films click here.
  • Delivering training days in the form of Induction sessions for adult social care staff new to Somerset as well as half day sessions for continual professional development (CPD) meetings for existing social care staff.  These sessions will form a regular slot in the training of adult social care staff from this point forward.
